Stage 1 or Stage 2: which is right for your car?

The honest answer depends on your hardware, not on the biggest number you have seen online. Here is how we decide between the two.

The difference in one line

Stage 1 works on a standard car. Stage 2 assumes you have already improved airflow — intake, exhaust, intercooler — and maps for those parts.

When Stage 1 is the right call

  • The car is mechanically standard and you want the best safe gain per pound.
  • You use it daily and want to keep the factory character.
  • You want the least intrusive change: no hardware, no extra noise, no MOT questions.

When Stage 2 earns its money

  • You already run a high-flow intake, sports cat or cat-back exhaust.
  • Charge temperatures are under control with an uprated intercooler.
  • You want more top-end power and are prepared for a firmer, louder car.

Putting a Stage 2 map on a standard car is a mistake. You end up asking the turbo for boost the hardware cannot support, and exhaust gas temperatures climb in a way that shortens component life.

What we need from you

Tell us exactly what is fitted. If you are unsure, send photographs of the engine bay and exhaust and we will identify it. We would rather recommend Stage 1 and be right than sell you a file that does not suit the car.

Can you go Stage 1 now and Stage 2 later?

Yes. Many customers do exactly that, and the upgrade cost is only the difference. Your original file stays on record so the car can always be returned to standard.
